When I told my friends that I am writing a book on marketing, one response I received from an old friend was:
“Please make sure you are writing something that contributes to the knowledge of the field and not just for self promotion.”
Being a marketer it is certainly easy to fall into that trap. As I think about WHY I am writing a marketing book, here are three reasons:
- When I was teaching business to business marketing course at University of Dallas many years ago, I didn’t find a textbook that I liked. I ended up building my own courseware which became the starting idea of the book project.
- Marketing is a constantly changing field especially with the introduction of technology. Over the years as I worked on the book, the outline kept changing and being revised. In the end I find in business marketing certain subjects remain the same, while others have been phased out/replaced by new channels influenced by consumer marketing .
- Each of us should have a personal achievement in mind (some call it bucket list, I like to think of it as personal Everest) and mine has been to complete this book. Recently a friend of mine succeeded in summiting Mount Everest with the ultimate goal of summiting the highest peaks in the seven continents (Everest, Aconcagua,Denali, Kilimanjaro, Elbrus, Vinson, Carstensz). I figure if he can do that, I can finish writing the book before he completes his goals 🙂
In this blog you will find my thoughts on the current field of marketing as I research and write my book, as well as just interesting content marketers should know as I do my research.
I welcome any comments about my book project and any articles I post. If you have any questions please ask away.
